How to find us…

How to find us…

Canopy Market is normally located under the historic West Handyside Canopy, just off Granary Square, though for June we are going ‘al fresco’ with a summer edition – coming out from under the canopy – and moving to King’s Boulevard!

Constructed in 1888, the West Handyside Canopy used to be a fish market on Sundays (when Billingsgate in the City of London was closed) and provided a covered area for unloading railway carriages filled with potatoes and other produce brought from across the UK, before being distribution throughout London.

Today we are reviving the mercantile heritage of the site as the new home for unique makers and sellers of select artisan food, design and art.

Eat the World SG - SG Participants

Eat the World SG - SG Participants

Unlike any Street Food Festival you have ever heard of, Eat the World SG brings the best international street food traders from London, UK; Singapore and Australia for an extraordinary street food adventure.

Join us to be a part of this unique street food festival bringing together the very best international street food from around the world.

Over the last two years we have shipped some of London’s finest food trucks half-way across the world to the Arabian dessert and international metropolis of Dubai and Abu Dhabi and have staged a series of street food festivals across the region in a celebration of amazing food!

This year, we are also taking the festival to Singapore!

Singapore is food obsessed and widely regarded as a global street food capital, so we are very excited about bringing the best street food from the UK and Australia to its 5.5 million citizens for an unforgettable, truly world-class line-up of street food.

While the South East Asian street food culture is famously strong, the ‘contemporary’ street food bug is only just starting to hit with only 4 food trucks in the whole of Singapore and they don’t currently have anything like this going on at all. This event will tap in to Singapore’s insatiable appetite and excitement for food, bringing together contemporary UK and Australian street food traders alongside Singapore’s iconic, top hawkers and the movers and shakers setting the new standards of Singapore’s food scene.

Magic Lanterns

Magic Lanterns

Stunning giant silk Chinese Magic Lanterns will transform Guildhall Yard into a wonderland of light and colours.

The tradition of Chinese Magic Lanterns spans a 2000-year heritage and is a hugely important cultural event, usually created to celebrate the arrival of the lunar new year and becoming a focal point for communities to come together. The tradition grew and over time the simple lanterns became more extravagant with craftsmen creating huge animals, dragons and depictions of famous landmarks as the nobility sought to display their wealth by displaying the most ornate lanterns.

Today, lantern festivals have become huge, extravagant displays where installations move, flash and incorporate modern figures and landmarks to excite huge crowds. Together with the Magic Lantern Festival we are bringing some of this excitement an awe to illuminate and animate Guildhall Yard for the 350 Great Fire commemorations.

See more about the Magic Lantern Festival here:

About Real Food Markets

About Real Food Markets

In the beginning…

Since our beginning as an annual, large scale food festival in 2007, our aim has always been to support small, independent food producers, increase access to real food and encourage people to reconnect with where our food comes from, cook more and appreciate the value of good quality food and drink. We believe in the power of food to bring people together and create a better, healthier world around us.

Real Food Markets…

The idea behind setting up our Real Food Markets is to try to provide as much convenience to great food as possible. We are up against the supermarket, but by finding locations where there is already a high footfall and working with the owners of these spaces, we can help support our independent food producers by providing them excellent trading opportunities and offer people an easy way to buy fresh, high quality ‘real food’ at honest prices.

Borough, Southbank, Kings Cross…

Following a residency operating a section of Borough Market, we launched a weekly food market at Southbank Centre which we spent 5 years growing and developing, before launching a new weekly Real Food Market, which now runs every Wednesday to Friday, and Canopy Market a ‘makers market’, both in the Kings Cross area. What used to be a rather sordid, unsavoury part of town has been undergoing a pretty dramatic face-lift and re-imagining recently. As part of the sprucing-up and development focused on the area, the power of food to regenerate and animate is being put into action and we are really pleased to be able to be a part of that and are proud to have a crew of amazing, committed independent artisans represented on the market.

Keeping it real…

By buying from independent, responsible food producers who are invested in their product, you are helping support the natural environment through sustainable food production as well as the local economy. And by buying direct from the people who produce your food you can trust its provenance and quality too.

So come along and enjoy, support and celebrate the very best, passion-driven, sustainable and ethically minded producers in the food game!

Real Food Ambassadors

Real Food Ambassadors

When we began Real Food Festivals we have had the support of some great ambassadors. Here’s some of our supporters and what they had to say:

Raymond Blanc

“In choosing our food we make a statement as to which consumer were are, whether we are responsible or not, ethical or not. We are now engaged in a process of reconnecting our food with our culture - and ethics will now drive our choice. Whether we are parent, employer, farmer, chef, industrialist etc each of us individually and collectively will have the responsibility to make better choices to create a better food chain. The Real Food Festival will definitely take us one step closer to discovering new and innovative propositions to our produce conundrums.”

Alex James

“Finally someone is taking a stance for the little guys….500 of the best artisan producers under one roof, why wouldn’t I be involved. You know where you’ll find me, at the cheese stand!”

Rosie Boycott

“The Real Food Festival was a fantastic celebration of the wonderful variety of food that British producers have to offer, and a brilliant way to talk to and buy from them. The debates, demonstrations and other activities meant that this year’s Festival had something for everyone and was a great way for people to support the best of British regional food”

Zac Goldsmith

“The way we eat, what we eat, where our food comes from, these are central issues. The Real Food Festival will change the way we think about food, and gives producers and consumers an opportunity to meet and share their passion for authentic quality produce”

Tom Parker-Bowles

‘The Real Food Festival is about provenance, artisinal production and a dedication to real flavour. Forget the faceless multi-nationals and mass market pap - this is a celebration of great producers and real good food.’

Joana Blythman

“Educating and inspiring consumers is the most effective means of change their buying patterns. So the comprehensive workshop programme combined with the opportunity to meet over 500 of the smallest, best and most interesting producers in Britain should put this new event firmly at the top of must do for foodies.”

Barny Haughton

“I support the notion that the philosophies of slow food and organic food are the invisible means by which, at both a global and local level, we can secure a better food future; better for human health, the environment, culture and gastronomy. Education through cooking and eating is the most powerful means by which we can achieve this end.”

Craig Sams

‘At long last London will have something to rival the Bristol Organic Food Festival or Slow Food’s Salone del Gusto – a place where organic and artisanal producers can bring their wares to the attention of the growing number of people who put taste, health and ethics above price when they make their food choices. I wish the Real Food Festival every success in this admirable and long overdue event.

The Real Food Festival was a fantastic celebration of the wonderful variety of food that British producers have to offer, and a brilliant way to talk to and buy from them. The debates, demonstrations and other activities meant that the Festival had something for everyone and was a great way for people to support the best of British regional food”

Geetie Singh

“Food can make our lives completely miserable and change our neighbourhoods or it can be one of the most delightful and beneficial aspects of society. Our food industry is our society. Driven by independently minded passionate people we are rediscovering fine, local, artisan and seasonal food, which we can all afford and should be available to everyone. This is the crucial leap towards a farming and producing industry that we can once again be deeply proud of…. Purchasing has power, join the consumer revolution!”

Mark Jankell

“The Real Food Festival will propagate relationships that will serve to fuel and strengthen the sustainable food network in the UK. It is very exciting to be involved in an event that will expose both consumers and businesses to a refreshing and ethical approach to food production. It is these kind of events that will enlighten consumers and provide them with the insight that will enable them to shift towards a more sustainable pattern of consumption.”

Mitch Tonks

“What a fantastic event to be a part of. Sustainability is the question we are asked most frequently about and it is such an important subject. We can’t wait to share our passion for brilliant British seafood”

Patrick Holden

“The Real Food Festival was not just an opportunity to sample and buy fantastic food, it was also a chance for consumers to really connect with producers, chefs and farmers who are helping to make our contemporary food culture so vibrant and alive. For the Soil Association to be the official charity partner of the Festival was an incredible privilege - sharing as we do the values of sustainability, authenticity and respect for the relationship between farm and plate. The Festival also made time to reflect on the serious side of the food debate - how we feed ourselves now and in the future, in the face of climate change, depleting fuel resources and a growing global population. This made the Festival a great combination of enjoyable, and stimulating food for body and thought.”

Shane Osborn

“Being a chef, quality produce is most important. This event is not just an opportunity for me to try new produce and build relationships with small producers, it is a great chance for the people that come to Pied a Terre to learn and taste what Real food should represent.”

About

About

We have been running food festivals and events since 2008, when we launched the first Real Food Festival at Earls Court Exhibition centre, which The Guardian called “Heavyweight, that is the only word for the Real Food Festival. One of the biggest and most interesting dates in the British food calendar.”.

We have since gone on to launch several annual food festivals, regular markets, pop-ups, and dedicated street food festivals championing and celebrating the very best food producers and businesses out there.

Our events have been staged at Earls Court Exhibition Centre, Southbank Centre, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Regent Street, King’s Cross as well as International events where we have shipped out the UK’s finest street food traders (and their trucks!) to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, to the feet of the tallest building in the world.

We are driven by a belief that people share our conviction in real food enough to seek out independent, artisan producers who put the quality and integrity of their product above all else, and our festivals, events and markets celebrate the pleasure of food while helping to support small producers and independent food businesses creating sustainable and ethical products.

These food producers and businesses are crucial in preserving our natural environment, local economies, agricultural knowledge and food culture. We believe it is vitally important to support their existence and reconnect people to where their food comes from. We don’t believe that food should be treated as a basic commodity and in an effort to bring great food to as many people as possible we have collaborated with some fantastic partners and like-minded organizations.

Click here to see some of the ambassadors who have supported us over the years too.

Food is the deep heritage and living expression of our history, and who we are today. This is no more evident than in India; a continent whose character has been formed, shaped and flavoured by many countless influences, exchanges and its varied climates. Informed by a kaleidoscope of different identities, it is a place of distinct regional differences and strong local traditions. It is this diversity which makes the food of South Asia one of the most enticing, exciting and satisfying regions of the world to discover through your senses…

…Bhujia dried, spicy snacks from the arid reaches of Rajastan; rice, fish and beef from the wet plains of Bangladesh; Rogan Josh, warming and elaborate meat dishes with yogurt and spices and dried vegetables to

withstand the Himalayan cold of Kashmir; the famous tandoor of the agricultural lands of Punjab; fish from the long coastline and rivers of Kerala; a serious penchant for fantastic chili heat commanding Sri Lanka; stir-fried vegetarian dishes led by Jain philosophy and a play of contrasts between sweet, savory and spice reflecting the important trade activity of Gujarat; the Portuguese influence in Vindaloo and seafood from the Indian Ocean coastline of Goa…

Flavours of India will be exactly that and will bring you the smells, textures and tastes of authentic Indian cuisine.

As well as chef demos and some restaurant quality dining you will also find a range of traditional street food. As is often the case, the most visceral and authentic expressions of a food culture can be found on street level. In a place where food is so central to daily life it is no surprise how much street food is embedded into the fabric of towns and cities across India. Songs have been written about the street food of Mumbai, where stalls cluster at beaches and around railway stations. Chandni Chowk, the main street of Old Delhi is often called the food capital of India, famous for its street food with the Paranthewali Gali, one of its narrow side streets, becoming a gastronomic mecca for its paratha fried breads. Flavours of India will give you a taste of the heady mix of flavors and textures of this dazzling street food scene in London, transporting you from the banks of the River Thames to the beachside of Mumbai!

A great business opportunity

A great business opportunity

It is almost impossible to encapsulate what the Real Food Festival is in just a few short sentences. But here goes…

The Real Food Festival is a feast of everything that is great about real food. For the last 4 years year, Earls Court in London became the largest food market you could ever visit and so much more:

  • food and drink to buy to take home
  • audiences with famous chefs
  • real food heroes
  • special appearance from some exceptional livestock

The Real Food Festival has now moved to the iconic location of London’s Southbank and this move has enabled us to reach even more people by allowing the public to attend with out paying an entrance fee.

The Real Food Festival is also about creating a level playing field upon which even the smallest producers can offer their fabulous, lovingly nurtured food and drink to a huge number of potential customers, something they couldn’t do without our support. What drives us to do this is the desire to show everyone the importance and enjoyment of eating food that has been produced cleanly and sustainably, where the producer gets a fair price for their goods.

More and more people are really starting to care about where their food comes from and to understand why their food choices matter, not just to their health, but to the community and our natural environment.

Our Earls Court event became established over the last 4 years as a unique event for public and trade to find and buy the best tasting, sustainably and ethically produced food that you can find anywhere. It attracted over 22,000 paying visitors and through this, we have developed a significant database of consumers who love good food and drink. On London’s Southbank, last September we attracted 50,000 visitors and will continue to develop the event to deliver more and more of the right visitors who will buy your products.

We market the Festival widely, using all the databases at our disposal, and a comprehensive marketing campaign that includes advertising, direct mail, leafleting, PR and comprehensive use of online and social media channels.

Join us at the Real Food Festival and become a part of the biggest showcase of the very best authentic produce assembled in the UK, giving you access to an audience of thousands of passionate food lovers as well as targeted trade who are looking for producers like you!

Taking part will be your perfect opportunity to:

  • communicate your message
  • sample and sell
  • launch new products
  • do some research build your brand awareness
  • showcase your expertise
  • grow your business in an environment that is all about celebrating what you do
