| Benn: Food labelling rules need to change - 27/1/09 |
|
At the recent Oxford Farming Conference DEFRA secretary Hilary Benn said that the UK was pressing the European Commission to change the law on food labeling to ensure it showed where the animal was 'born, reared and slaughtered'. In the mean time he is urging retailers and food companies to introduce a voluntary country-of-origin labelling policy. Robin Maynard, Soil Association campaigns director, expressed surprise at Mr Benn's speech saying: "Hilary Benn should know there's already a label that delivers what he is calling for - the Soil Association's organic symbol." Robin said the symbol offered a "one-stop shop" for consumers who wanted food produced to high environmental and animal welfare standards. |
